Consistent Communication Motivates Employees

By Margaret Hansen, JobsInRI.com

In a recent JobsInRI.com poll, 85% of those surveyed told us that they are most motivated when management offers consistent briefings on all company news with an open door for questions and/or more information.

So how do you communicate information to your employees? And is it consistent?

No matter your company size or company culture, a recession breeds rumors and fears about one's job. Setting up a consistent communication plan can settle your employees' nerves, positively impacting productivity and morale. Here are three tips to get started:

1. Start a Private or Closed Blog

Private blogs offer password-protected access so that you can communicate freely with selected users (your employees) without blasting news to everyone on the internet. Share the password with employees, but be sure to update it when an employee leaves the company. Enlist managers to communicate their department news. Allow comments to help create a more open and transparent community.

Be sure to read up on the latest information on free blogs and communicate any requirements to your employees. A private blog typically requires users to set up an account with a username, password and email address.

2. Offer Choices

Whether it's crafting an actual email every week with a link to your blog, offering a blog alert to opt into and/or the ability to subscribe to a blog RSS feed through one's RSS reader (some private blogs allow this) - there are many ways that employees can learn about the latest news at your company. Let them decide which option they prefer and be sure to offer training or assistance with this.

3. Host Informal Monthly Gatherings

Whether it's a lunch 'n' learn or a staff meeting, get together monthly to review what's been posted on the blog with any new updates. Some people will never have time to read the blog, others may need a review, and certainly everyone can benefit from an update.

In the age of Web 2.0, face time with your employees is meaningful, reassuring, and morale-boosting. Even if your presentation is short, a company meeting is a great opportunity to answer questions, quell false rumors and just chat in a company-sanctioned environment. Throw in some refreshments for better attendance.

However you decide to communicate, a consistent and open dialogue will show your employees that you value them, a sure fire way to motivate your staff.
